Peter Moore, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft, has raised the possibility of a Blu-ray disc drive add-on for the Xbox 360. This follows the announcement by Bill Gates at the Consumer Electronics Show that Microsoft would be producing an external HD DVD drive, to become available later this year.
In an interview with Japanese website, ITmedia, Moore said that if Blu-ray was to defeat HD DVD in the bid to become the next standard DVD format, Microsoft would consider creating an external Blu-ray drive.
While Moore admitted it was an option, Microsoft’s clear preference is HD DVD.
If the HD DVD format was to come out on top, the Playstation 3’s internal Blu-ray drive would become obsolete, a fact that Moore was happy to point out. He believes that the Xbox 360 is more adaptable as it has no in-built drive to hold it back, no matter who wins the format war.
